Selling on the flea market for Institut Makedonia

As a company we consider it our responsibility not to shut our eyes to the world around us, but to try our best in helping those who need it. Since 2008 we have been supporting the Institut Makedonia, a high school in Bukavu, DR Congo.

It makes us very happy to see that circumstances for the school are improving constantly, also due to our contributions.

DR Congo:
The history of the Congo has been shaped by many wars. The last one ended officially in 2003 and is often seen as the worst and deadliest in the history of Africa. 5.4 million people died because of the war until 2008. Different militia groups are still fighting about the country's natural ressources and cause contant turmoils.

Bukavu:
This town is located on the banks of the lake Kivu, in the East of DR Congo, close to the border to Ruanda. It was founded in 1901 by the Belgian colonian authorities and has about 225.000 inhabitants (the same amount lives in the surroundings of Bukavu)

About the project:
Education is one of the most important components in development work for a war-torn country like the DR Congo as educated citizens provide a chance for self-help. Often, education stops after elementary school in Congo because there are no secondary schools. This is one of the main reasons why we think it is important to support a high school like Institut Makedonia. To contribute to education means to contribute to the future.
Every little contribution is important and 100% reaches those who need the help.

Progress at Insitut Makedonia:

2003 - Foundation of Institut Makedonia in Bukavu, DR Congo. The school has to share premises with the elementary school

2008 - The school is able to buy their own property and starts building a temporary school house.

2009 - Institut Makedonia educates 189 boys and girls in 7 classes. The staff consists of 13 teachers and 2 janitors

2010 - Construction of another class room for a pedagogical schooling

Selling on a flea market for the good cause:
We took the opportunity to raise money by selling on a flea market in August 2010. The stuff we sold was donated by family and friends - and boy, did we get a lot! From 7:00 in the morning until 6:00 in the evening, we were on our feet to get people to spend their money, always emphasizing that all earnings would go to the Institut Makedonia.
At the end of the day, nearly everything was gone from our stand and we were very happy and proud to see the good result this day has brought us and the pupils at Institut Makedonia!
